Large paper birch ladle. This one has been around a while, time to finish it.
Large cherry cooking/serving spoon, short handle. Mora 120 and 24-year-old North Bay Forge Deep Bent Knife in its prime.
One winter years ago, I put our old Jotul #4 Combifire on a sled and dragged it down the hill into the woods. It heated us in our little cabin for a while long ago, we loaned it to friends and it heated them for a while, then it came back to us here. Somewhere it lost its 3 legs, and I stored it poorly so the bottom was wet and rusted through in spots. I always loved this stove and wanted to bring it to the woods and encase it in dry-laid stones, which I still plan to do one day. But this day I dug out a pile of riven ash from under the snow and cleaned off the pith and bark while enjoying a winter fire. A woodpecker joined me after a while. What a peaceful time spent, so grateful for this experience.
Drove to town, on my way back up our road an hour later our neighbor’s ancient barn lay across the road in a heap of sticks. If you haven’t, you should shovel your roof.
